AWW TOP25 Girls National High School Rankings: November 2019
AWW Rankings are updated within the first two weeks of every month.
The 2019-2020 season is off & running! Here’s the second installment of our TOP25 Girls National High School Rankings! With our TOP25 feature, we’re able to recognize 350 of the top female wrestlers in the country. Some notes, thoughts & headlines before you take a look:
We now rank grades 7-12!
We now rank U.S. girls in grades 7-12 into one “high school” ranking. We noticed there were some middle school girls in 7th & 8th grade beating some of our 9th-12th grade ranked girls, and sometimes badly. So hey, why not include them in the ranking? They’re already at the competitive level, so let’s recognize them.
What events do we use?
Our rankings come from national USA Wrestling events, UWW Women’s Nationals (also affectionately called “Body Bar”), and we also use state championship results to gain insight when needed. As the year progresses, we’ll also pay attention to other major events. This round, we took a look at Super 32 results, USAW Preseason Nationals & the Journeymen Classic. Congratulations to all the young women that made the TOP25 list!
Three new #1’s at the top!
We have some new #1’s! Samara Chavez, a junior from Texas, just keeps winning. After claiming the crown at both Super 32 and Preseason Nationals, she’s our new #1 at 112. With Stefana Jelacic recovering from injury and off radar for over a year now, we’ve taken her off the board until she returns, sliding Camille Fournier into the #1 spot at 117. At 106, we moved Cristelle Rodriguez of California, who won a silver medal at Cadet Worlds in August, into the #1 spot over Mia Palumbo who hasn’t wrestled in over a year. We know Palumbo is a great wrestler, and it’ll be fun to watch her when she comes back, but in the end, it was hard to argue with a World silver medal. Here’s the rest of our #1’s: junior Sage Mortimer from Utah at 100 pounds, sophomore Sofia Macaluso from New York at 122 pounds, sophomore Skylar Hattendorf from New Hampshire at 127 pounds, sophomore Kylie Welker from Wisconsin at 132 pounds, junior Cheyenne Bowman from California at 138 pounds, sophomore Lillian Freitas from California at 144 pounds, sophomore Amit Elor from California at 152 pounds, sophomore Kennedy Blades from Illinois at 164 pounds, senior Elisa Robinson from Kansas at 180 pounds, junior Olivia Brown from Oklahoma at 200 pounds, and senior Lilian McCoy from California at 225 pounds.
Make room for new hammers
This ranking displays a cross-section of some of the young, new talent that have been making waves on the national scene along with upperclassmen who have been around for a while. The young blood has been doing it for years in youth wrestling, and now they’re here. Among them are freshman Alex Szkotnicki of Maryland (#4 at 100), 8th grade Jasintai Mallqui of New Jersey (#14 at 100), freshman Olivia Messerly of Kentucky (#10 at 106), freshman Arieana Arias of California (#5 at 112), freshman Alexis Montes of Texas (#13 at 117), freshman Jaclyn Dehney of New Hampshire (#5 at 122), 8th grade Lauren Walton of Kentucky (#8 at 122), freshman Haley Ward of Missouri (#12 at 127), freshman Maddie Kubicki of Maryland (#12 at 132), freshman Destiny Rodriguez of Oregon (#2 at 144), 7th grade Ella Pagel of Minnesota (#12 at 152)—the only 7th grader in our rankings!—freshman Alivia White of Washington (#12 at 164) and New York’s freshman Sujeydy Matos (#11 at 200). Stay tuned on these young ladies!
Lots of movement
It’s typical for this time of year for wrestlers to arrive in the new season in new weight classes, and there’s a lot of that going on. Growth spurts, weight lifting, and other factors can result in seeing new faces in new places, and with it, new match-ups, new rivalries, and a new landscape to rankings.
Disclaimer
Weight classes were a bit frustrating this round as none of the events we used for new rankings employ the same weight classes we use in our national rankings. We use USAW’s weight classes that are common at most of their national events. That said, the Journeymen Classic and Super 32 had different weight classes (and some of them were “tweeners” when compared to our ranking classes), and our friends at USAW used the Madison system at their Preseason Nationals! That said, it was tough to be precise at times about what weight class certain girls should be ranked in.
Injuries/Breaks
We’ve removed Olivia Shore and Stefana Jelacic from the rankings temporarily until they return to the scene. Once a girl goes off the grid for whatever reason for 15 months, we take them off the board until they return. We just did the same thing at the Senior Level with Helen Maroulis. Once top wrestlers like this return, they’ll be fit back into the upper echelons of our rankings.
Feedback
We listened to your feedback! After hearing some compelling info about results we didn’t notice or girls that were off our radar, we made some adjustments this round. Remember, it’s never perfect! Tell us where we got it wrong! Mind you, it has to be more than emotion. We use facts and we are not predictive. It might be true that so-and-so would probably beat so-and-so. Then do it. We can’t rank based on results that might happen and haven’t happened. We also can’t use results from 2-3 years ago, especially if one athlete hasn’t wrestled in a while and the other has been progressing. Things change radically from year to year in wrestling, especially while wrestlers are young and developing. One more note: Parents and coaches with rock star youth wrestlers need to be patient. Even if your athlete is the Solar System Champ in 12U, we can’t rank them in a high school ranking until they give us some results at this level. Finally, be aware that ranking #16-#25 is the most difficult as there’s often less head-to-heads and there’s so many good wrestlers you could make a case for. Regardless, if we need to make adjustments, rest assured that we post updated rankings the first week of every month. OK, now to the rankings!
