Dual of the Week: Missouri Baptist vs. William Jewell

LIBERTY, MISSOURI - The William Jewell College program hosted the Jewell Duals last Saturday in Liberty, Missouri, at the Mabee Center, where #15 NCAA program William Jewell squared off with #13 NAIA program Missouri Baptist. It was a battle of new vs. old, as William Jewell is in their inaugural season, while Missouri Baptist is sailing into their 13th campaign. In the end, it was the Spartans on top in a 31-11 win.
The match of the night was at 155, where NAIA #3 Tiyahna Askew (Missouri Baptist University) faced Sarina Bertram (William Jewell College), a freshman who recently took 7th at the Missouri Valley Open. In the end, it was 7-4 Askew, edging the Missouri native in a tight match.
The Missouri Baptist lineup was dominant at most weights, scoring tech falls and pins, including #11 ranked Jessica Corredor getting a fall at :27 at 109, #17 Karoline Ortiz scoring a 10-0 tech fall at 130, and #9 Shania Gowan getting the fall at 2:49 at 191.
Other than a forfeit at 143, the sole win for William Jewell was Emalie Olson, a sophomore transfer from Lindenwood who’s had some big wins this season, including falls over Augsburg All-American Gabby Skidmore at the Waldorf Open and King All-American Melanie Mendoza at the MoVal. She won her match at 123 in this dual over Missouri Baptist’s Malaicka Pierre-Louis with a fall at :50.
William Jewell is now 2-2 on the season in their first year, while Missouri Baptist moved to 4-1.
