New York High School Girls Folkstyle Rankings: February 19, 2020

NY HS Rankings.jpg

AWW Staff & Ranking Feedback Team

Here’s the latest ranking for New York high school girls! The last ranking we had was a preseason ranking (sorry), so this ranking reflects the results of the entire 2019-2020 season. You’ll find a lot of new names in there, as there’s some new young women making waves at different weights.

New York growth
Because of all the positive changes in New York in high school girls wrestling, there are many more events and wrestlers, so you’ll see a maturity in the rankings. A few years ago, when we started ranking NY girls, we only had the top 6. Now some weight classes have as many as 15 “rankable” girls. Good signs for New York! We also have a lot more head to head results that help us get the girls in the right places.

Who’s #1?
You’ll see some fixtures at #1, young women who are always at or near the top, like Forest Hills hammer Layla Dervisevic at 106, Copenhagen 7x All-American Riley Dalrymple at 113, Minisink Valley 3x national champion Sofia Macaluso at 120, Minisink Valley 2019 Pan-Am Champion Mia Macaluso at 126 (who also placed 4th recently against the boys in her state qualifier), Truman All-American McKenzie Samuels at 160, Riverhead All-American Katie Moore at 182, and Wingate All-American Joanna Jones at 195.

But you’ll also see there are SEVEN new #1’s! We welcome the following to the top: Salem-Cambridge’s 2019 Pan-Am champ Angie Dill at 99, Coxsackie-Athens’ Schyler Caringi at 132, Newark’s Jade Eldridge at 138, Hoosick Falls’ Zoe Gress at 145, who also recently committed to wrestle in college for #4 NCAA program Colorado Mesa, North Rose-Wolcott’s Persian Singh at 152, Martin Luther King’s Yoelis Gutierrez at 170, and Inwood’s Sujeydy Matos at 220.

Deep weights
You’ll also notice that our state has depth at certain weights. 99 features four Body Bar All-Americans along with 2020 PSAL City Champion Vikki Austin, and Zoe Griffith, who just won her state qualifier against the boys in Section 10. The 113 class has All-American Kaylee Swalgin at #2, Section 3 hammer Emily Sindoni at #3, the PSAL City Champ Rachel Chai at #4, and freshman Ragan Retell, who just dominated the Section 5 Girls Championships. 120 features two national champions at #1 and #2, with Sofia Macaluso and Ally Fitzgerald, respectively, and All-American Esther Levendusky at #3, who won the PSAL state title last year, took 2nd to Macaluso at Eastern States, and has been dominating in upstate NY.

Besides Caringi at #1, 132 features two All-Americans at #2 and #3, with Naomi Henry and Natalie Dunn taking those spots. The 138 class features the leveled-up Jade Eldridge, who had a win over #1 at 132 Schyler Caringi this year (Caringi also beat her twice), 2019 PSAL state champ Daija Cloud at #2, and two All-Americans at #3 and #4, with young star Alessandra Elliot and Tays Pascual, respectively. 145 also features two All-Americans at the top with Gress, and #2 Mika Walters, returning soon from injury, while Eastern States Classic champ Damiana Racciatti sits at #3.

All of this is evidence that women’s wrestling is growing in New York and given us some depth at almost every weight.

Notes
Yes, it’s folkstyle season, but we do regard some of the freestyle results if they are helpful for us to determine rankings. We don’t have enough head to heads to ignore the freestyle results as they help give us more accurate info for making this list. If girls split matches with each other in both styles, folkstyle trumps freestyle during folkstyle season for ranking placement, and vice versa.

We now include 7th & 8th graders in this “high school” ranking, even if they don’t have varsity results. Some girls, like 7th grade Madison Westerberg at 126, clearly have some rankable results. She wrestled modified this year and has a 46-7 record on TrackWrestling, with results against some of the other girls in the rankings. We’re going to rank someone like that if we have facts to back it up.

Please note that we included the wrestler’s previous ranking in parenthesis after their names. If they had no previous ranking, we simply put (NR) for “Not Ranked.” You’ll see there are a lot of previously unranked young women that hit the list this time!

Rankings are never perfect! Tell us where we got it wrong. Is there incorrect info? Let us know!
