Six NCAA #1's Went Down in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - It was not a good weekend to be ranked #1 in the NCAA as 6/10 top-ranked wrestlers went down at the NWCA National Duals in the NCAA Division. Of those 6 upsets, Simon Fraser pulled off four of them.
116: unranked Karla Godinez-Gonzalez (SFU) over #1 Felicity Taylor (McKendree) 8-0
123: #2 Cheyenne Sisenstein (King) over #1 Alex Hedrick (SFU) 5-1
130: #2 Lauren Mason (SFU) over #1 Allison Petix (King) 10-0
143: unranked Ana Godinez-Gonzalez (SFU) over #1 Ashlynn Ortega (King) 8-2
155: #2 Alyvia Fiske (SFU) over #1 Alexandria Glaude (McKendree) 8-4
191: #2 Sydnee Kimber (McKendree) over #1 Emily Cue (SFU) 10-2
The only NCAA #1’s not to fall were 101 Alexia Seal of SFU, who did not wrestle, 109 Emily Shilson of Augsburg who went 4-0, 136 Emma Bruntil of McKendree who went 3-0, and 170 Kori Bullock of McKendree who went 2-0.
And we have to wonder, who are these Godinez-Gonzalez sisters? When you see their accolades, you’ll know these were not total upsets. Originally from Mexico, the Godinez-Gonzalez sisters have been living and competing in Canada for Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club. They moved to the northern neighbor of the United States in 2010, and could not even speak English when they arrived. They have been rising stars in the Canadian women’s wrestling scene ever since. 21-year-old Karla, the 116 for SFU, was 6th last year in the Senior Division at the Canadian Wrestling Championships. Her younger sister, 19-year-old Ana, the 143 for SFU last weekend, is currently the #1 ranked wrestler in Canada at the Senior level at 62 kg. She also earned the O.W. at the Canadian Wrestling Championships last March, winning Junior and Senior gold.
In 2018, Karla Godinez-Gonzalez was stripped of her gold medal won at the Canada West Women’s Wrestling Championships for a positive doping test.
